GIF is the Gift of Magic

leave a comment »

I was attempting to “level up” in Skyrim before dinner time. My wife was giggling right next to me. Her laugh was muffled, almost muted. For ten minutes, I was between dragon screams of death and this muted giggling. Curiosity made me pause my sacred journey through the ice-capped mountains of Windhelm. Turns out, when I looked at her computer screen, she was rolling through cat gifs. Made sense immediately. I scrolled through a few with her before returning to kick some major dragon ass.

Well, inspiration set in today at work, and here’s my attempt at a gif of my cat, Cafe con Leche. She usually is rolling around the ground and couch, but here she is looking innocent and perpetually rotund.

I used an online program called CreateAgif to make this happen.

Jhumpa, Our Other Cat…

leave a comment »

Sentimental thoughts run rampant during this time of year. Looking at pictures of old and reminiscing upon them greatly affects the power of memory and today, as I’m going through my cat photos and images, this blog entry is dedicated to our other cat, Jhumpa (my love affair with the great Jhumpa Lahiri).

This orange tabby comes to us from the same litter as her sister, Cafe Con Leche, from Berkeley Eastbay Humane. We got them both the day Michael Jackson passed away. To this day, thoughts of naming this one P.Y.T. remain on our minds.

Why dedicate one blog to this cat? I feel an unbalance amount of love at home with my two cats; I believe it might be happening online as well. So this goes out to all the orange tabby cats out there! And of course what’s a sentimental blog entry without prefacing it with a song.

Always and forever…Jhumpa.

These two above images really take the cake for the cuteness award. She’s always been the type of cat that lands on our lap or rides on our shoulders and more so now, she loves being there bounced and rocked while we walk around our place.

This cat does tend to sleep 14-18 hours a day. At least, in our minds she does…it’s more about lounging, like the image below that she prefers.

So when Jhumpa is not sleeping, she idles. And quite frequently this cat idles in space that often says to us, leave me be…I’m chilling, alright??? ALRIGHT?!

The below image kind of tops it when it comes to Jhumpa. By far, the lazier girl of the sisters, she really enjoys being on our laps…this time, I think my wife has the most practical use of our cat yet.

Making Cat Pads from Old Chairs

Our friends gave us these chairs last year. We thought a reupholster project would be fun to try. As the weeks and months quickly passed by, our desire to turn these things from dollar cushions to mid-century revivals vanished like the Inner Sunset’s sun. And the wife really wanted to take on a different version to convert this into something else. She was inspired by our cats…they love using these things to rest, sleep, get fat, pass the time, and __________ (fill in the blank for cat activities).

So away I went. I sawed one arm of each chair and went around until the base was completely free of the upper portion of the chair…goodbye.

The foam was cut a little bigger than the measurement of the area. Wife says that the extra foam gives more cushion and strength to the pad. But before she began (yes, she did most of the actual making here), the edges of the cut arms needed to be rounded a bit.

Here, the support is reinforced and additional fabric straps were stapled across the top of the springs as well. Once that was completed, wife pulled the fabric over the framework to begin the padding.

As I “supervised” the entire project and documented, my wife went to work and hammered in the stubborn staples. (sidebar: She’s really into D.I.Y. projects…and so am I. Weekends like this, over Labor Day, we decided to take it easy and get into crafts/projects. I love it when we both take the time to work on things and settle into a grove, while listening to music. Moments like these are hard to come by when you don’t notice it…especially when you’re out and about doing things, running errands.)

The white finish to the wood really gives these old chairs a modern appeal, but not shabby-chic. The fabric and patterns we decided on “pops” against the white finish. Seems like we made a great decision not to choose the wizards and fairies pattern (kidding…).

And…the piece de resistance is when we got the cats (Jhumpa & Cafe con Leche) to actually sleep on it. From the image above, we definitely needed to coax their OCD a bit. The pillow is one of Jhumpa’s favorite sleeping pads in the bedroom. Eventually, they gave into the comfort and hipness of the cat pads.

Below is a short video of how easy a circular saw is to handle. Ear plugs and safety goggles were part of my safety gear.
